French Jobs Vocabulary — Frequently Asked Questions
How do I say my profession in French?
Use Je suis followed directly by the profession, without an article: Je suis infirmière (I am a nurse) or Je suis ingénieur (I am an engineer). An article is normally added when the profession is described: Je suis une infirmière expérimentée (I am an experienced nurse).
How do you ask someone what they do for a living in French?
A natural question is Qu’est-ce que vous faites dans la vie ? in a formal or polite situation, or Qu’est-ce que tu fais dans la vie ? informally. You can also ask Quel est votre métier ? or Quel est ton métier ?
Do all French job titles have a feminine form?
Many job titles change according to gender, such as un infirmier / une infirmière and un acteur / une actrice. Others keep the same spelling and only change the article, such as un secrétaire / une secrétaire or un journaliste / une journaliste. Some feminine forms and their frequency of use may vary depending on the profession and region.
What’s the difference between métier, profession and travail?
Le travail is the general word for “work” and can also refer to someone’s job. Le métier refers to the occupation or type of work a person does, often involving particular skills. La profession has a more formal meaning and is commonly used in administrative or professional contexts.
Are job titles capitalized in French?
No. French job titles are normally written with a lowercase letter: Elle est médecin, Il est professeur. They are capitalized only when they appear at the beginning of a sentence.
