How to ask or give directions in French

In this lesson, you will be learning how to give directions in French to another person when they ask you for directions on how to go somewhere, and also how to ask for directions if you are lost or looking for a place.

There is also a video to watch at the end of the lesson.

Vocabulary and how to give directions in French

Gauche – left / à gauche – on the left

Example: La boulangerie est à gauche. = The bakery is on the left.

Sur le côté gauche – on the left side

Example: Le magasin est sur le côté gauche de la rue. = The store is on the left side of the street.

Tournez à gauche – turn left

Example: Tournez à gauche au prochain feu. = Turn left at the next traffic light.

Droite – right / à droite – on the right

Example: La pharmacie est à droite. = The pharmacy is on the right.

Sur le côté droit – on the right side

Example: La boutique est sur le côté droit de la rue. = The store is on the right side of the street.

Tournez à droite – turn right

Example: Tournez à droite après le pont. = Turn right after the bridge.

Allez tout droit – go straight ahead

Example: Allez tout droit jusqu’au rond-point s’il vous plaît. = Go straight ahead to the rondabout please.

Tournez à droite et continuez tout droit – Turn right and go straight ahead

Example: Tournez à droite et continuez tout droit jusqu’à l’église. = Turn right and go straight ahead until you reach the church.

Continuez tout droit sur 500 mètres – Go straight on for 500 meters

Example: Continuez tout droit sur 500 mètres et vous verrez le parc. = Go straight on for 500 meters and you’ll see the park.

Continuez tout droit sur 500 mètres puis tournez à gauche – Go straight on for 500 meters then turn left

Example: Continuez tout droit sur 500 mètres puis tournez à gauche pour arriver au musée. = Go straight on for 500 metres, then turn left to reach the museum.

Une intersection – an intersection

Example: Tournez à droite à l’intersection pour arriver à la gare. = Turn right at the intersection to reach the station.

Demi-tour – Turn back / U-turn

Example: Faites un demi-tour si vous avez manqué la sortie. = Turn back if you missed the exit.

Feu tricolore / feu de circulation – traffic lights

Example: Attendez au feu tricolore. = Wait at the traffic lights.

Feu rouge – red light

Example: Arrêtez-vous au feu rouge. = Stop at a red light.

Faites demi-tour au feu rouge – Make a U-turn at the red light

Example: Faites demi-tour au feu rouge et revenez en arrière. = Make a U-turn at the traffic lights and go back.

Un rond-point – a roundabout

Example: Prenez la première sortie au rond-point. = Take the first exit at the roundedabout.

Example: Prenez la première sortie au rond-point pour aller à l’hôpital. = Take the first exit at the roundedabout to go to the hospital.

Un pont – a bridge

Example: Traversez le pont pour arriver au parc. = Cross the bridge to reach the park.

Le centre-ville – downtown

Example: Je dois aller au centre-ville pour faire des courses. = I have to go downtown to do some shopping.

Arrêtez la voiture ici – Stop the car here

Example: Arrêtez la voiture ici, s’il vous plaît. = Stop the car here, please.

La prochaine – the next

Example: Prenez la prochaine rue à gauche après le feu. = Take the next left after the traffic lights.

Devant – in front of

Example: Arrêtez-vous devant le métro. = Stop in front of the metro.

Derrière – behind

Example: Arrêtez-vous derrière le bus. = Stop behind the bus.

Sous – under

Example: Arrêtez-vous sous le pont. = Stop under the bridge.

Sur – on

Example: Attention, il y a un trou sur la route. = Careful, there’s a hole on the road.

À côté de – next to

Example: Arrêtez-vous à côté du restaurant, s’il vous plaît. = Please stop next to the restaurant.

En face de – in front of

Example: Je suis en face de l’hôtel, viens me chercher. = I’m in front of the hotel, come and get me.

Environ / à peu près – around / about

Example: La station de métro la plus proche est à environ 200 mètres. = The nearest metro station is around 200 meters away. Example: Il faut marcher à peu près 5 minutes pour rentrer à l’hôtel = It takes about 5 minutes to walk back to the hotel.

Là-bas – over there

Example: Le supermarché est là-bas. = The supermarket is over there.

Au début de la rue – at the beginning of the street

Example: Arrêtez-vous au début de la rue. = Stop at the beginning of the street.

Au bout de la rue – at the end of the street

Example: Arrêtez-vous au bout de la rue. = Stop at the end of the street Example: Tournez à droite au bout de la rue. = Turn right at the end of the street

au coin de la rue – at the corner of the street

Example: Je t’attends au coin de la rue. = I’ll wait for you at the corner of the street
