Learn French vocabulary: 200+ common words
Bonjour, language enthusiast! If you just started to learn French or want to review some French words you already learned, this post might be useful for you. You can find more than 200 words for beginners covering different topics such as days, daily routine verbs, job names, animal names, family vocabulary, etc.
In the first part, you can find most of the words with a picture. Then in the second part, you have the complete list of French vocabulary without pictures, in case you want to print it, the list is also available as a PDF file.
The vocabulary covered here comes from one of my videos published on my YouTube channel, Learn French with Escargot.
In this video, I didn’t add the definite articles to specify the gender of the nouns, as I wanted to keep it simple for new French learners. Therefore I created this post for those interested in having the list of vocabulary with the definite articles. The video is available at the end of this post.

A little reminder:
If the noun is singular, the article is “le” (the), for masculine nouns, or “la” (the), for feminine nouns. If the noun is plural, the article is “les” no matter what gender the noun is.

Le jour, un jour = the day, a day
La semaine, une semaine = the week, a week
Le week-end, un week-end = the weekend, a weekend
Le mois, un mois = the month, a month
Common nouns designating days, months, or seasons are all masculine in French without exception.
- Le lundi, un lundi = the Monday, a Monday
- Le mardi, un mardi = the Tuesday, a Tuesday
- Le mercredi, un mercredi = the Wednesday, a Wednesday
- Le jeudi, un jeudi = the Thursday, a Thursday
- Le vendredi, un vendredi = the Friday, a Friday
- Le samedi, un samedi = the Saturday, a Saturday
- Le dimanche, un dimanche = the Sunday, a Sunday
For the months in French: In spoken French, we add « le mois de » or « les mois de » (the month of, the months of) in front of the month’s name, for example:
- Janvier, le mois de janvier, les mois de janvier = January
- Février, le mois de février, les mois de février = February
- Mars, le mois de mars, les mois de mars = March
- Avril, le mois d’avril, les mois d’avril = April
- Mai, le mois de mai, les mois de mai = May
- Juin, le mois de juin, les mois de juin = June
- Juillet, le mois de juillet, les mois de juillet = July
- Août, le mois d’août, les mois d’août = August
- Septembre, le mois de septembre, les mois de septembre = September
- Octobre, le mois d’octobre, les mois d’octobre = October
- Novembre, le mois de novembre, les mois de novembre = November
- Décembre, le mois de décembre, les mois de décembre = December
However, these forms “les janviers” or “les avrils” can be find in poetry.

- La demi-heure, une demi-heure = half an hour
